Bynames from Ibn Baṭūṭṭa
by Basil Dragonstrike

The following lists contain laqabs and nisbas I found. Note that there are about as many definitions of the difference between a laqab and a nisba as there are writers on the subject. I therefore have chosen to refer to such jointly as "bynames"; note that this is not how the SCA defines bynames.

I have divided them up into "direct bynames" (that is, those found in names in the position where bynames are usually found), "bynames found in nasabs" (bynames found only where a progenitor is referred to by his laqab or nisba), "bynames found in kunyas" (bynames found only where a person is referred to as the father of someone known by his or her laqab or nisba), "bynames found in kunyas and nasabs" (bynames found only in both kunyas and in nasabs), "bynames found in kunyas-in-nasabs" (bynames found only where an ancestor is referred to as (to translate) Son of the Father of al-______), and finally "bynames in nasabs and kunya-in-nasabs" (bynames found both in nasabs and in kunyas that are in nasabs). Bynames belonging to more than one category are placed in the highest-ranking category according to the above list.

As there are not that many women mentioned in Ibn Baṭūṭṭa (at least in the first volume), I have put feminine names first in each category (if there are any).
