Isms from Ibn Baṭūṭṭa
by Basil Dragonstrike

On this page I present all the isms I have found in volume 1 of Ibn Baṭṭūṭa. The first list is of isms used as personal names, that is, isms per se. The second list shows isms I found only in kunyas. The third list is of isms found only in nasabs. It is followed by isms I found in a kunya and a nasab, but not used as an ism per se The last list is of theophoric isms, which duplicates names from the other lists. It is worth noting that in addition to the standard "‘Abd al-____" theophoric names, I have included ‘Ubaidallāh and various names derived from it. This is because ‘Ubaid(a) is the diminutive of ‘Abd; that is, ‘Ubaidallāh is "The little servant/slave of Allāh." I have also included two names that, while they refer to Allāh, do not contain ‘Abd in any form.

The spelling ‘Uthmān is found only in nasabs, but the name (in the spelling ‘Othmān) is found as an ism per se. The apostophe in Ad'ham is neither a hamza nor an ʻayn; it is there to show that there is a dāl (d) is followed by a hāʼ (h), rather than it being a dhāl (dh). Note also there are a number of isms per se of the form "al-____".

As there are few women mentioned in Ibn Baṭūṭṭa (as is true elsewhere), for the convenience of women wishing Arabic names, I have put feminine names at the head of each category.
