Bynames found in Ibn
al-Bannā ʼ
by Basil Dragonstrike
The following lists contains the laqabs and nisbas I have found in
Ibn al-Bannāʼ. There are nearly as many definitions of the
difference between a laqab and a nisba as there are writers on the
subject. I have therefore chosen to refer to both laqabs and nisbas
as "bynames." Note that this is not the SCA usage of the term
"byname".
In spoken Arabic, the prefix "al-" is not always pronounced as
written. Specifically, the "a" is elided (that is, not pronounced)
following a word ending in a vowel; also, the "l" is sometimes
assimilated (that is, it is changed to the sound of the following
letter) before "sun letters." Makdisi has changed the spelling of
"al-" to fit the pronunciation throughout his translation. Upon
consideration, I have decided to use the spelling "al-" throughout,
as I believe this is more useful to re-enactors, particularly as the
spelling with "al-" is more common in scholarly sources than with
"al-" altered.
I have divided the lists into "bynames per se"
(that is, those found in names in the position where bynames are
usually found), "bynames found only in kunyas"
(that is, where a person is referred to as the father of someone
known by his or her byname), "bynames found only
in nasabs" (that is, where a progenitor is referred to by his
byname), and "bynames found only in kunyas and
nasabs" (that is, name elements found both in kunyas and in
nasabs, but not as a byname per se).
